Pop Rocks are small pieces of hard candy that have been gasified with carbon dioxide under super-atmospheric pressure. When these gasified sugar granules come in contact with moisture, in someone’s mouth or in a liquid, the gas retained inside the carbon dioxide bubbles is released, causing its characteristic popping sensation as well as crackling and fizzing sounds.
If the pirate would be made out of Pop Rock Candies he would dissolve into thin air with the first wave during rough seas.
When the chemist "William A. Mitchell" was working on an instant soft drink in the 1950s, he accidentally invented the formula for Pop Rocks, which he patented in 1956. However, Pop Rocks did not appear on the market until around 2 decades later.
In 1979 there was a rumor that consuming Pop Rocks together with carbonated drinks would cause the stomach to bloat and explode. This rumor persisted so strongly that the manufacturer took extreme measures to combat these rumors. They launched a hotline, placed several advertisements in magazines, sent 50'000 letters to schools, and sent the inventor William Mitchell on a speaking tour to personally explain that Pop Rocks were harmless.
