Harry Burnett Reese first worked on the dairy farm of Milton S. Hershey, owner of the Hershey Chocolate Company, in 1917. Several years later, he began working in the Hershey chocolate factory. This work inspired him to make his own chocolate to earn a little extra money on the side for his family (he had 16 children!). 
The business was so successful that he was later able to build his own 100'000m2 factory where he produced a wide range of sweets.
During World War II, Reese was forced to discontinue many products due to supply shortages, especially of sugar. However, he decided to focus his production on the peanut butter cups, as they were the most popular and required the least amount of sugar in production.
Reese's now produces so many peanut butter cups each year that with its annual production, every person in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Japan, China, Africa and India could have a cup.
